Escalating gas prices…tensions and turmoil in the Middle East…a struggling world economy. Leadership, in times of uncertainty, is not that much different from that of ‘normal’ times. What does differ is the degree to which basic tactics of change management are applied. In times of uncertainty, leaders must pay even more attention to the people issues in change. Here are five ways to avoid leadership havoc.
Get off of autopilot.
Examine your organization’s strategy. With your leadership team confirm or revise your current strategy or mission. Should it change as a result of what is going on in the environment? Should it change as a result of what is going on with customers or competitors? Should you continue going in the same direction - swerve to the right or left - or take a totally new path? Don’t overreact but don’t sit still waiting for ‘it’ to pass.
Manage and multiple the

This number one complaint keeps many a professional from expanding their business through a book. As a book-writing coach, the Number One Question I get is, “How can I find time to write?” Here’s encouragement and how to’s to get your book finished.
1. Write a short book for your first effort.
Expand an article, talk, or report by adding a few stories, anecdotes, quotes, tips, or how-to’s. This book may even be just one chapter idea you have for your longer book. Focused writing sells well too. People Online and off want easy-to-read short information because they are so busy. They don’t want to spend a lot of time reading. Make your first book 10-50 pages.
2. Write your print book and eBook at the same time. It’s like cooking–you create a dish that you can serve twice for a one-time effort.
Make two word files, one for each format.
As you

MICRO = too close for comfort
When you stifle the creativity of your associates through
micro-management practices then your company pays
in lost profits.
Nothing kills the spirit of your associates quicker than a
boss or supervisor standing over every move that needs
to be made each day.
Give some space. Everyone needs breathing room. Don’t
spend your day trying to see who you can catch goofing off
at the water cooler. Statistics indicate that all of us need a
break from the “grind”.
LACK OF A PLAN
Micro-management is one result of running your business without
a plan. No one has a clue so at best someone has to call every
move. Failure to share the vision means focus is missing.
As your “Mom” used to say, there is unrest in the “troops”. The
“Natives” are restless. Why? No one understands the benefit.
“What’s In It For Me” is always on our mind (WIIFM).

Seventy percent of US households use the web when shopping locally, and about 25 percent of all searches are looking for local information. As more and more households make the switch to broadband connections, this trend will continue to escalate.
Search engines have eclipsed print and TV ads as the primary way consumers find local products and services. But until now large national and international brands had a stranglehold on Internet search marketing. Only they had the manpower or outside resources to plan and implement a multiple site, online search marketing program.
Why should your business get into the online search pay-per-click (PPC) arena? Let’s do the math. A recent US Bancorp Piper Jaffray study indicates that the average lead from a search engine costs $0.29. Yellow pages and direct mail leads cost $1.18 and $9.94 respectively. So, a search engine delivers four leads for the price of one Yellow Page lead

Many people today simply prefer the convenience of paying by credit card. If you want their business, you must be able to accept their credit-card payments.
In part one of this series we will discuss why you should accept credit cards, and the basics of getting merchant status. Part two will deal with objections you might get, which credit cards to accept, and the check paying option.
Obtaining merchant status, which allows you to accept credit-card payments, might seem like an unnecessary hassle, especially for those in business where the majority of their customers pay by cash or check. But by not accepting credit-card payments, you lose sales. This is especially true if yours is a mail order business, or consulting business. Just look at the majority of business today, all of them accept credit cards, and becoming more and more popular all the time are debit cards.
As many businesses

Audiences around the world are all different. Cultural, social and religious
differences impact on how people learn, take in information and interact
with presenters.
After delivering 3 presentations to 1,200 Managers and Franchisees from the
largest fast food company in the Philippines, these are my thoughts on how
to make an impact with culturally diverse audiences.
This is the result of extensive feedback and practical knowledge of what
works and what doesn’t after delivering business presentations throughout
Asia.
Here are 10 Tips on Delivering Better Business Presentations to Asian
Audiences.
1. Do Your Research. Find out as much as you can about the country and
organisation you are working with. Read guidebooks, travel magazines,
search the Internet and use the local media to gain as much knowledge as you
can about the cultural background and history of the people you are working
with.
2. Use local language and key phrases as an icebreaker, welcome or to
highlight important points. Modify the content of your presentation to
account for

I was watching a TV program some months ago about a biologist working in Central America who was dedicated to protecting the panther species from extinction. During the program I heard him make a comment that upon reflection I found had embedded in it seeds of wisdom that not even he was aware of.
The comment went something like this (of course I’m only paraphrasing what he said): “As the population of panthers decreases the ensuing future generation of animals that they feed on grow up not knowing fear”. In other words the fear reaction is the result of the trauma that goes with having one’s life threatened, which I agree with. He followed this up by saying that this state of “no fear” was clearly an abnormal one.
In other words he was saying that these anmials were in an abnormal state because they had not yet experienced the trauma of

Have you ever worked for someone who was such a micro-manager that it drove you crazy? And have you ever worked for someone who was so hands-off that you felt like a lone warrior on the battlefield? These are examples of you working for leaders who did not adapt their style based on the employee’s needs. I would venture to guess that you were not entirely motivated to put out your very best effort every time when you were feeling such frustrations.
What can you, as a manager, do to prevent the same mistake? My suggestion is to follow what good parents do.
Good parents instinctively know how they need to manage their children. But we sometimes don’t make the same connection when we are at work. Let’s think about the different stages of a child’s development.
The Toddler
At this stage, there is so much they don’t know. They are just learning the
